Install as Android App: For installing Text Scratchpad: One-Tap Copy on your Android mobile as an app, you have two options:

  1. Early Access App from Play Store: Follow directions in 'Early Access' app on Google Play Store. Note this needs you to share your Google id (email id) on my Google group (Google requirement for 'Early Access' apps).
  2. PWA app using Chrome: This is safe and secure and does not need you to share your Google id on any Google group. Follow instructions in Install App As PWA With Security & Trust section below.

Text Scratchpad: One-Tap Copy is a minimalist, offline-capable app that installs on Android devices just like a native app, and can also be used as a web app (PWA) on other mobile devices, tablets, and PCs.

Dictating or typing a long message directly inside WhatsApp or a mobile AI assistant like Gemini can be problematic. The input boxes are cramped, the message can get easily sent by mistake before it is ready to be sent, and so quite inconvenient when you want to write or dictate a message that takes up more than a few lines.

Text Scratchpad: One-Tap Copy provides a dedicated, distraction-free, large canvas. It acts as a clean "staging ground" for your text. You open it, type or dictate comfortably using your device's native capabilities, copy your finished draft with a single tap, and paste it wherever you need it.

It is designed for mobile but can be used on tablet and desktop as well.

It is a Progressive Web App (PWA). For Android, I have created a Trusted Web Activity (TWA) Android bundle which is available as 'Early Access' app on Google Play Store. The Android TWA app load time is typically under 2 to 3 seconds (on my Samsung M21 mid-range Android mobile) but sometimes can take a little longer. Once loaded, its speed is comparable to a native app. More on Speed & Usability on Mobile

๐Ÿš€ Installation Options

'Early Access' App on Google Play Store

The app has not yet achieved 'production' status on Play Store but is available on it as an 'Early Access' app which is the fully functional version. To install it from Play Store:

  1. Visit my Google groups page and click 'Join Group' button on it. Note that this is required by Google for 'Early Access' apps.
  2. After an hour or so, visit Text Scratchpad Google Play Store page and install app from that page. You can then use the app like any 'production' app.

๐Ÿ”’ Install App As PWA With Security & Trust

Because this is a Progressive Web App (PWA), you can install it directly from your browser without needing an App Store.

To confirm that this app is safe to use, its live URL has been scanned by multiple independent security vendors via VirusTotal and is certified clean and free of malicious code. Additionally, its transport layer security has been evaluated by Mozilla Observatory and awarded an elite A+ grade.

๐Ÿ“ฑ How to Install it on Your Phone or PC

Running the app as an installed Progressive Web App (PWA) removes the browser navigation bars and URL boxes, giving you a dedicated, standalone app screen.

  • On Mobile & Tablet (Android / iOS):
    1. Open the PWA app link: https://textscratchpad.netlify.app/ in Chrome (Android) or Safari (iOS).
    2. If you see an "Install App" prompt, tap it.
    3. If not, tap your browser's menu (three dots in Chrome, or the Share icon in Safari) and select "Add to Home Screen" or "Install App". Make sure to choose "Install App" if prompted, so it acts as a standalone application rather than a simple browser shortcut.
  • On Desktop (Windows / macOS / Linux):
    1. Open the PWA app link: https://textscratchpad.netlify.app/ in a web browser like Chrome, Edge, or Brave.
    2. Click the install icon (the computer/plus icon) on the right side of the address bar, or choose "Install Text Scratchpad..." from the browser menu.
⚠️ Note on Loading Issues: If you experience an issue where the app hangs on the loading spinner for an extended period (up to 5 minutes) during an update or initial load, this is typically caused by a browser network timeout handling missing assets (such as the legacy favicon) under slow or unstable network connections. While we believe this issue has been resolved by adding explicit favicon links to the HTML, please alert the author, say by posting a comment on this post, if you encounter any such hangs.

๐Ÿ“– How to Use

Text Scratchpad is designed for a frictionless Draft ➔ Copy ➔ Paste workflow:

  1. Draft & Dictate: Type your message or use your device's built-in voice-to-text tools to dictate hands-free.
    • Mobile: Tap the microphone key on your virtual keyboard (like Gboard or Apple Keyboard).
    • Desktop: Press Win + H (Windows) or the system dictation key (like pressing the Fn key twice on macOS) to speak directly into the large input box.
  2. One-Tap Copy: Use the Copy All button in the header actions bar to copy your entire draft to the clipboard.
  3. Switch & Paste: Switch to your target application (such as WhatsApp or Gemini) and paste your message. You can switch directly via your device's app switcher, or close/swipe away the scratchpad first.
  4. Clear & Restore: The Clear button immediately clears the box and temporarily toggles to Undo, allowing you to instantly restore your text if you cleared by mistake. If you start typing, the button reverts to Clear, but you can recover the last 'Cleared' draft at any time using the adjacent Restore button (which will ask for confirmation if you have typed new text, to prevent accidental data loss).

โ„น️ Note on Persistence: Your draft is securely stored locally on your device. It will remain in the editor even if you close the app, shut down your browser, or reboot your device, until you actively modify it or tap the Clear button.

✨ Key Features

  • ๐Ÿ“ Frictionless Staging Ground: A clean, distraction-free, spacious editor. Perfect for drafting long messages or prompts, copying with one click, and pasting directly into other apps.
  • ๐Ÿ’พ Seamless Autosave: Saves your text locally on every single keystroke or dictation pause. Even if you accidentally close the tab or swipe the app away, your work is preserved.
  • Offline-First Speed: Once loaded, it runs 100% offline. No internet connection is needed to launch the app, type, or copy your drafts.
  • ๐ŸŽ™️ Voice-to-Text Compatibility: Works hand-in-hand with your device's built-in dictation services (like Gboard, Apple Dictation, or Windows voice typing).
  • ๐ŸŽจ Sleek Light/Dark Themes: Automatically inherits your browser or system's color scheme with a beautiful, high-contrast theme that's easy on the eyes.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ 100% Private: Your text is saved entirely inside your browser's local sandbox. No server transmissions, no databases, and no external network requests—ensuring complete confidentiality.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Keyboard-Smart Layout: The header menu bar and word counters are dynamically locked in place, preventing the mobile keyboard from pushing controls offscreen.
  • ๐Ÿ”Ž Built-in Font Scaling UI: Includes built-in A- and A+ buttons allowing users to seamlessly scale the editor's text size from 70% to 250%. This would be helpful for visually impaired users.
  • ↔️ Cursor Navigation: Use the built-in and arrow buttons in the footer to easily nudge your cursor to fix typos. Long-press to move continuously.

✨ How it Keeps Your Typing Smooth

  • Smart Autosave Indicator: Instead of clunky save buttons, the app features a passive status pill in the header.
    • While you are typing, it displays a pulsing orange document-sync icon (a folded-corner page enclosing a circular refresh arrow) and, on desktop, the text "Drafting".
    • When you pause for 1 second, it saves your changes and updates to a solid green document-checkmark icon (a folded-corner page enclosing a checkmark) and, on desktop, the text "Saved".
  • Autofitting Your Screen: The editor automatically resizes itself to sit neatly above your virtual keyboard when it opens, keeping all buttons active and in view without pushing the header off the top of the screen.

⚡ Speed & Usability on Mobile

I conducted real-world tests on a standard mid-range Android phone (Samsung M21) to see how the app performs:

  • Startup Speed:
    • If the app (and Chrome) are already cached in memory, it opens in about 2 seconds.
    • On a fresh device boot-up, it takes under 3 seconds to open.
    • In worst-case scenarios (heavy memory usage with many background apps running), it takes around 4.5 seconds to load.
  • Two Tap Launch-to-Type Workflow: Unlike standard note-taking apps, there are no file/doc selection screens to navigate.
    • First tap on app icon to open it.
    • Second tap:
      • If starting fresh or continuing an old draft: Tap inside the input box.
      • If clearing an unwanted old draft: Tap on Clear button. The app empties input box and sets focus on it.
    • The on screen keyboard will be shown for typing or dictation using microphone key.
  • Zero-Friction Copy: Standard note apps require a multi-tap sequence to copy text (double-tap ➔ select all ➔ copy). Text Scratchpad reduces this to a single tap, making the overall draft-to-clipboard workflow faster than these apps.
Note: I later came across Quick Edit free version Android app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rhmsoft.edit. It opens previously opened file right away and so no file opening taps are needed for the use case covered by Text Scratchpad app. But for 'Copy All' or 'Clear All', 3 taps are needed. It shows ads but they are minimal.

Comparison with Samsung Notes native app on my M21 mobile

While Text Scratchpad (TSP) is a web-based Progressive Web App (PWA) rather than a native system app like Samsung Notes, for the overall task of composing a few lines of text and copying it to clipboard (for pasting into target app), TSP is faster than Samsung Notes.

  • ⚡ Time-to-Type (Startup Speed)
TSP loads in 2 to 3 seconds and displays the input/typing screen. Although the native Samsung Notes app launches in slightly over 1 second, it requires an additional tap to create a document, taking about 3 seconds to display the input/typing screen. Opening an existing document takes slightly longer. (Opening a Samsung Notes document via a file shortcut takes ~2 seconds, but file shortcuts cannot be pinned to the Android Quick Launch drawer like PWA apps can).

  • ✍️ Editing Responsiveness
Once loaded, TSP is just as responsive, smooth, and lag-free for active composing as the native Samsung Notes editor.

  • ๐Ÿ“‹ One-Tap "Copy All"
TSP copies your entire draft to the system clipboard in a single tap. In contrast, Samsung Notes requires a multi-tap sequence: long-press, tap Select All, and then tap Copy.

  • ๐Ÿงน One-Tap Clear & Focus
TSP lets you clear the screen and auto-focus the input cursor in one tap (with a safety Undo/Restore feature if tapped accidentally). Samsung Notes requires multiple taps to select all text and delete it.

  • ๐Ÿ—‚️ Zero File Management Overhead
Samsung Notes requires small work of deleting newly created scratch documents or keeping a separate scratch document specially for this purpose. TSP acts as a pure, lightweight scratchpad—no file clutter to manage.

๐Ÿงน Uninstallation & Clearing Data

Because Text Scratchpad is a Progressive Web App (PWA), uninstalling it works slightly differently depending on your device:

  • On Desktop: When you uninstall the app (via Chrome's app menu), you will be given a simple checkbox asking if you want to clear the app's data. Checking this box will successfully wipe your saved drafts and settings.
  • On Mobile (Android): When you choose "Uninstall" using the app icon on your home screen, Android only removes the app shortcut. Your saved draft will remain safely stored inside your Chrome browser (which is a feature designed to prevent accidental data loss if you reinstall!).
    • To permanently wipe your data on mobile:
      • Before uninstalling the app, navigate to Android Settings > Apps > Text Scratchpad... > Storage > Clear Data. Alternatively, long-press on app icon may provide site settings option from where where you can clear data for the site. After data for site has been cleared, you can uninstall the app.
      • Before or after uninstalling the app, open the app's URL in a standard Chrome browser tab, tap the settings icon (the lock or tune icon in the address bar), and select Clear Data.

๐Ÿ”„ Updating the PWA to the Latest Version

Normally, the Progressive Web App (PWA) will update in the background when a new version is deployed. You may then be prompted to reload the app to run the new version.

However, if for some reason your PWA app does not auto-update, you can force-update the app as per procedures given below to see the latest changes immediately.

๐Ÿ“ฑ On Mobile & Tablet (Android / iOS)

Method 1: App Info (Android)

  1. Long-press the Text Scratchpad app icon on your home screen or app drawer.
  2. Select "App info" (or the Info icon (i)), then choose "Storage" or "Site Settings".
  3. Choose the delete/clear icon next to stored data.
  4. Close and relaunch the app.

Method 2: Via Browser Settings

  1. Open the app in your browser tab.
  2. Tap the Site settings icon (the icon to the left of the URL in the address bar).
  3. Choose "Cookies and site data" (or "Site settings").
  4. Tap the delete/trash icon next to the stored data.
  5. Refresh the page and relaunch the app.

⚠️ Note on Uninstalling: Simply uninstalling the PWA from your Android device and visiting the URL in Chrome will not trigger an update. Android does not clear Chrome's internal site cache when the app wrapper is uninstalled. To force the update, you must clear the site data in Chrome using the methods listed above.

๐Ÿ’ป On Desktop (Windows / macOS / Linux)

Method 1: Hard Refresh (Fastest)

  • While in the app window, press:
    • Windows / Linux: Ctrl + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R
    • macOS: Cmd + Shift + R

Method 2: Clear Site Settings

  1. Click the Site settings icon (the lock/settings icon to the left of the URL in the address bar).
  2. Choose "Site settings" or "Cookies and site data".
  3. Click the "Clear data" button or the trash bin icon next to the stored site data.

Why I chose PWA instead of native app

A native Android app would load faster, but I do not know native Android programming and wanted to avoid blind "vibe coding" with AI tools.

Furthermore, safe app distribution (as opposed to raw sideloading which displays scary security warnings) is a major hurdle. Publishing on the Google Play Store for relatively new developer accounts like mine has become a highly bureaucratic process, starting with a strict barrier of "closed testing" requiring at least 12 testers for 14 consecutive days.

I am familiar with React Native programming, but React Native development takes longer than building a PWA and suffers from the exact same app store distribution challenges as a native app.

So I opted for a Progressive Web App (PWA) with offline-first functionality. Even though the AI tool did almost all of the coding, I have a decent overall view of the codebase and can troubleshoot issues myself if needed. PWA distribution is as simple as sharing a web deployment link, and modern mobile and desktop browsers handle the installation process seamlessly without displaying any scary security warnings to the user.

An update is that I later created a Trusted Web Activity (TWA) Android bundle wrapper using PWABuilder website and submitted that to Google Play Console (Play Store). As mentioned earlier in this post, that app is currently in 'Early Access' stage and not yet approved for 'Production'.
